COOKIES & TREATS/ MOM AND DAD'S HOMEMADE VANILLA ICE CREAM

BY LOUISE AND TOMMY RICKETTS

Joan remembers: "When my mother-in-law, Betty Locke, handed down to me their ice cream maker, I made a call to Momma for her homemade vanilla ice cream recipe.  This is what she told me...

"Get on the phone and call home a whole bunch of people!"

Ingredients:
2 cups milk
3 egg yolks slightly beaten
1/2 cup sugar
1/8 tsp. salt
1 cup cream (light or heavy)
2 tsp. vanilla

Mix sugar, salt and egg yolks.
Pour in milk.  Cook in double-boiler
until mixture coats the spoon (stirring
constantly).  Cool, strain, add cream
and vanilla.

Place in ice cream maker container.
Now next is why you called over a bunch
of people.  Everyone needs to take a turn,
turning the crank handle.  Make sure you
have plenty of ice and rock salt.  Keep on
turning the crank until the handle becomes
hard to move.  (follow the directions on your
ice cream maker.)

Place container in the freezer for 30 minutes.
Remove lid from container, remove the beater
from the container and scrape ice cream off beaters.

TIP:  triple the recipe so everyone can have a "big bowl!"

You can add fresh fruit if you'd like.  My family prefers to add their fruit on top of their ice cream.  I still like it mixed right in while you are churning.  Whichever way you choose...we hope you enjoy!

"Ice Cream never tasted as good as when you
cranked it out yourself!"
